Microfilm Duplication

FicheNet Imaging Solutions clients customarily choose two generations of microfilm. The first generation is the Master. This Master serves as the archival media and should be kept in an environmentally controlled storage facility. The second generation is the duplicate. This duplication serves as the working copy of the Master. This is the media used on a day to day basis for retrieving and viewing you documents.

Duplicating Duplicates (for ALL formats of microfilm)

Duplicates can be duplicated. However, FicheNet Imaging Solutions cannot guarantee the quality of a duplicate from a duplicate. Making a duplicate from the master film is ALWAYS the preferred method. Duplicating film is what is known as a Lossy procedure. This means that once an image has been duplicated, it will not be identical to the original image. Each time another generation is made some quality is lost. So making duplicates of duplicates is 3rd generation film or maybe worse.

  • Fiche or Jackets: Making duplicates of 105mm duplicates requires scrubbing the existing title stripe off with alcohol before duplicating otherwise the title will not show through on the new copy. "Com" duplicates don't have a title stripe and this step is not necessary. Or if so desired we can just run them "as is." It's up to you.
  • 16mm or 35mm rolls: Requires some special handling by us, for example if they are already loaded into 3M cartridges the leaders need to be removed, the film needs to be wound out of the cartridge etc... However, no alcohol scrubbing or the like is necessary.

Both of these processes are considered special handling and does increase the cost.
